Portsmouth: The News

August 20, 2009
ALMOST nine tenths of Portsmouth Grammar School's students achieved grade A or B at A-level this year.

Eighty eight per cent of students managed at least one A or B grade, with 60 pupils scoring A grades in three or more subjects. Twenty eight achieved four A grades.

Director of Studies, Nick Weaver, said: 'There has been a lot of talk about students opting for soft subjects at A-level. 'But we are proud to have achieved record results in what are traditionally considered the harder A-levels. Our most popular subjects are Maths and English Literature, where more than 92 per cent of our 113 passes were at A or B grade.'

Science students also performed well, with two-thirds of the school's 119 pupils who studied a Science subject achieving an A grade in at least one of their subjects.

Among those celebrating was Alice Gibb, who has recently modelled on the catwalk for Vivienne Westwood and Giles among others, for the Fall season. She achieved four A grades will studying History at Cambridge later this year.

Ian Pethick will begin his study of Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford, having scored four A grades.

Earlier this year, he travelled to Washington to witness the presidential inauguration celebrations, having won a scholarship awarded for his debating skills.

School headmaster, James Priory, said: 'The results this year reflect a huge breadth of subjects, with a range of pupils performing well. There are some real successes from pupils who have been at the school from the Junior School though to the Sixth Form, as well as those who joined us for their A Level studies.'
