 Today's were the best exams in the exam's 58-year history, with three in four entries getting at least grade C.

A record 26.7 per cent students were awarded an A - up from 25.9 per cent last year. But the star students still face a desperate scramble for university places. Up to 40,000 could be turned away as the recession triggers a surge in applications.
Experts predict up to seven students will be battling for every place up for grabs this year.
